Moville Sewage Treatment Pump Shock
River Row residents have just seen the plans for the Sewage Treatment pump that they had been told was coming.
Initially they thought that it would just be a small pump that would direct the sewage from the river up to Carnagarve or wherever else they put the Sewage Treatment Plant.
Needed Plant
They knew that Moville needed a Sewage Treatment Plant and pumps and that the River Bredagh needed cleaning up too.
A small pump redirecting the sewage would be a small price to pay and they felt that it wouldn't put them out too much.
Shock
However, when they saw the plans they got a shock - with little time to put objections in.
From August 3rd to August 6th the Moville Festival will have a Fairground operating opposite the houses there on Fair Green (or Cow Park) as it is sometimes called.
The Circus and Fairground were regularly situated there in the past.
Not Fair
However, there will be no Fairground in the future as there will not only be a Sewage Treatment Pump there but there will be a 5.5 metre tall building and a car park there as well.
Not only that, they are proposing to insert Storm Water Holding Tanks - and that on what is designated a Flood Plain.
Flood Plain
Planning permission had previously been turned down for housing on that area precisely because it was a Flood Plain .
Local residents have pictures of the River Row being flooded before and can't see the sense in putting Storm Water Holding Tanks (which are supposed to be mostly underground in an area that floods).
Health Problems
Dr. Don McGinley has worries over potential health problems for residents as the buildings are only yards away from the houses there and has put in an objection as has local resident John White.
Also John White has sent in a letter to the Council which replied saying his objections had been 'noted'.
Constant Whine
It seems also that the pumping station will be operating constantly day and night and that there will be a constant whine for the residents of the quiet cul-de-sac to get used to.
It seems that the pumping station builders will be building a hedge to alleviate the unsightly effect of the plant but that it will take up to 10 years to grow.
Environmental Impact
According to John White in his objection the report doesn't take into account the environmental impact to the wildlife, like the Brent Geese, who assemble at the mouth of the River Bredagh.
The herons also nest there.
It seems that the report states that there will be no odours as there are no houses within 150 meters of the pumping station which is palpably untrue as the complex will come about 150 inches from the White's house.
Another local resident Michael Lafferty has organised a petition.
No Fairground
There will be no Fairground on Fair Green in the future as the pumping station will be taking up almost half of the space.
That patch of land has gone from being called Cow Park to Fair Green.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what it should be called in the future with no Fair able to use it and a dirty great Sewage Treatment and Storm Tank facility there?
Public Amenity
I used to design computer systems for Sewage Treatment Works the managers of which called their contents "organic solids" and "polluting liquids".
I think you can guess what they stand for.
A public amenity looks as if it is going to disappear from the people of Moville.
Now that Fair Green is to become Organic Solid Park how long will it be before Bath Green gets concreted over?
