Moville Pier

If you read the Inish Times today you would see the new monument that is going to be put up at the end of the old pier in Moville.

It's always nice to see something new.

The sculpture is made of oak and will be hoisted onto a 25ft long steel pole.

It was made by Derry artist Locky Morris and will cost €50,000.

A Fid

It is supposed to represent a Fid which is used in ropemaking.

It will be put at the old embarkation point for those who were emigrating to America.

I hope it is pretty strong oak as the lough now lashes up onto the pier and there are several days a year when the end of the old pier is under water.

Baseball Bat

I haven't seen a Fid but to me what it looks like is a baseball bat.

Shame the sculptor didn't notice this this as he could say that it had great significance as this was the departure point for America, that baseball is America's game and it is a reminder that as the emigrants stepped off the pier they were heading for a new culture and a new way of life.

I reckon he missed a trick there.

Wood Carvers

I asked someone else what they thought about it and they said that being made of wood it would be wide open to attack by vandals and it wouldn't be long before local youngsters were carving their names on it.

Perhaps the artist thinks that his would enhance it.

Maybe it's a really hard wood Canadian Oak that you can't carve on.

Let's hope so.
