Moville BeatlesFest
I got an email from Eve Blair the other day asking if I would like to come and talk about the upcoming BeatlesFest on the Paul McFadden Show.
Of course I was delighted to accept.
DylanFest
I had been up to Derry with Paddy McLaughlin (teacher and musician) to talk about the DylanFest at the end of June with Paul McFadden and we spoke on the air for about 10 minutes with Paddy giving some fascinating insight into the influence of Irish music on Bob Dylan especially by the Clancy Brothers.
Quite a few people came for the DylanFest from Derry and many must have heard about it via the Paul McFadden Show.
New Fellow Guest
I asked Michael Murphy of the Bar-A-Cuda to come along this time with me as the Bar-A-Cuda is the main venue for the BeatlesFest, with music all day Saturday and Sunday into the wee small hours as well as on Friday night.
He also has the main festival act Henry McCullough, the only Irishman to play Woodstock and who played in Wings with Paul McCartney, on Saturday night.
Nervous
Michael was a bit nervous going up in the car as he hadn't been on radio before.
On the way up in the car we worked out what we wanted to get across on the show.
It's always best to be prepared. Last time I forgot to mention how potential vistors could get more information about the Festival and how they could get accomodation.
It's easy to do.
Delayed
After about 5 minutes waiting at the Foyle Radio Studio Eve came out and told us that they had an important news item and that they wanted to record us and put us on tomorrow.
That was fine by us as it meant that we got publicity on Foyle Radio on two days instead of one as they had to tell their listeners that it was cancelled till tomorrow.
Less Nervous
It also meant that we could hear it ourselves, 'live' if you like, tomorrow morning.
I think it made Michael a little less nervous as it wasn't going to be actually live.
We chatted to Paul before the interview. He is very good at putting you at your ease.
Then he suddenly told us that it was 30 seconds to go.
Tomorrow Morning
It's going to be on tomorrow morning (Wednesday) between 10am and 10:30am and I'll let you decide yourself how it went but I thought it went quite well.
The time passed quite quickly and as Paul was winding up the interview I suddenly though "I've done it again. I haven't told them how to get further information and accomodation".
Would It Be Rude?
I thought to myself "would it be rude to interrupt Paul just as he was winding it up"?
I took a chance by putting my finger up and saying "If anyone wants to find out about accomodation then they should look up www.CraicOn.com spelling it out".
Paul didn't seem to mind at all and so it was job done.
Pictures
I had taken my camera and asked if we could have a couple of pictures taken beside Paul and he happily obliged.
We then spent several hours distributing the BeatlesFest schedule flyers around the pubs of Derry and on the way up the road to Moville.
Perfect Illustration
The morning was a perfect illustration in what is involved in organising one of these festivals, i.e. a quarter of an hour of glamourous radio interview followed by several hours of grunt work treading the streets of Derry.
For anyone who wants to hear the interview it's on Radio Foyle do this:-
1. Click on BeatlesFest Interview
2. Click on Wed
3. Fast forward the 15mins 4 times and by 5mins 2 times whence you will hear Eleanor Rigby followed by the interview.
IRC
I'll then be on live on Inishowen Community Radio talking about the BeatlesFest immediately afterwards at 10:30am on Wednesday - followed by another day of gruntwork picking up a fresh bunch of flyers in Buncrana and distributing them in Buncrana, Carndonagh and Moville.
