We're planning a mini-fest in October

RocktoberFest in Moville

We're just about to slip into the off season in Moville.

Already one can notice the difference in custom at the pubs and restaurants in the town.

It will be much worse come October and November.

Looking Into the Abyss

Moville has nothing planned, as far as I know, to attract people to the town from now to Christmas.

Halloween is the only break in the darker days between now and then.

So, why not put something on to alleviate the gloom.

I've always found that if you put something on in Moville people will come.

Hard Times

Last winter (and autumn and spring) were a hard time for Moville businesses.

During that time Moville's only remaining hotel, the Caiseal Mara, went into receivership - although it is carrying on as a business.

It doesn't looks as if this winter is going to be any better.

Indeed, the signs are that it could be worse.

Less Tourists

The summer in Moville saw lots less tourists come here than before.

In fact, my father, Gerry senior, said that it it was the worst July he can remember for tourists.

August was a little better but not as good as August last year, perhaps partly due to the demise of the Summer Festival.

Take Things Into Our Own Hands

So, who not take things into our own hands and put on a little fun between here and Christmas?

Already both pubs I've spoken to, Rosatos and the Bar-a-Cuda, have said that they want to take part in it.

Because it is a bank holiday weekend the pubs are likely to take more musical acts than they did during the DylanFest and BeatlesFest weekends.

The schools are off between that weekend and the Halloween weekend.

Rosatos and Bar-a-Cuda

Rosatos want to put music on during the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Bar-A-Cuda want to put music on during the Saturday and Sunday nights.

They normally go for just the Saturday night.

Double Saturday

However, with the bank holiday, we have a 'double Saturday night' this time round.

It's great to actually have a bank holiday for one of the festivals.

We are still not there yet as we have to have a majority of the licence holders in the town involved to get the late licences.

However, I'm not expecting that to be a problem.

Not Certain

I would think that be the time late October comes along that the pubs would be pretty pleased to have a good weekend with late licences.

But, we'll see.

This is Moville and nothing is ever certain.
