Town Clock
The Town Clock didn't open all of last week.
That doesn't mean to say that it is now shut.
However, I'm told that things like TVs were seen being taken out.
Victim
Is the Town Clock another victim of the downturn?
A few people have tried their luck in there in recent years running the place but without much success.
Indeed the owners have lost it and it is now owned by the bank.
Shame
It would be a shame if it was to close.
However, things have gravitated against it.
A late licence used to cost €210.
However, it went up to €410, and then €510.
Someone told me that it was now up to €710.
That's hard to believe.
Very few places can afford that.
High Cost
With the hire of bouncers and staff the cost is quite high for just one night.
Added to this is that they used to be able to serve drink till 2:30am but this has been changed to 2am.
With most people not going there till about one o'clock, that's a lot of beer and spirits to sell in an hour.
They were playing with one hand tied behind their backs.
No Dancing
If it is closed it means that there is no place that youngsters can now go to dance.
That's a shame.
It means that they will go to other towns like Carn and Redcastle now and Moville will miss out.
Benefits
Other pubs benefitted from the Town Clock being open late as it attracted people from other towns and they would go to pubs like Maguires beforehand to have a few drinks before going up the Town Clock.
If the Town Clock has closed there will be very few places to go out to eat in Moville now for an evening meal with the Foyle also long closed.
We have the Round the World Clipper yacht race coming up in early July this year and the Derry's City of Culture next year.
Tide Turns
Let's hope the tide turns and we can get some of these pubs and restaurants back open by then.
We are now down to 7 open pubs in Moville when there used to 16 two or three decades ago.
It will be good for those still open but it means that less people will come to the town as there is less variety.
The cavalry is coming but will they get here in time?
