Tomatoes
I was taking a walk on the shore by the River Row the other day and looking at the increase in plant life just by the water's edge and spotted something I've only seen growing in gardens or in greenhouses before - it was tomato plants with tomatoes growing on them.
I used to grow them on my balcony in London so I spotted them immediately (who wouldn't).
Plants
The Lough sometimes encroaches above the shore wall by the River Row once or twice a winter and must pull back some soil with it.
Probably some soil gets blown onto the rocks over the wall too.
As a result, you get a nice array of plants at the top of the rocks between the gardens and the Lough.
Cultivated
However, tomatoes don't generally grow wild.
They are a cultivated plant.
They seem to be growing quite well as far as I can see.
Even in London they don't turn red without being brought in and placed by a sunny window to ripen.
Blooming
So, it looks as if those ones will go to waste unless one of the locals picks them and takes them inside to ripen.
It's not just one plant either.
I counted 24 of them with around two thirds having tomatoes of them of various sizes.
Maybe in future years the River Row will be like a Wild Tomato Plantation all along the top of the rocks.
