Gillens
I published an article recently showing that Gillen's was cheaper that Sainsbury's for most items.
However, I made one mistake.
I added 20% onto the Sainsbury price to get the price in euros.
However, as the Inishowen Independent pointed out, the rate that Sainsbury gives is €1.28 to the pound and not the in between rate of €1.20 so I'll redo my calculations and recompare them.
Tropicana Orange Juice
€3.11 - Sainsbury
€2.49 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 25%
Kerrygold Butter
€3.11 - Sainsbury
€2.59 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 12%
Punjani Teabags (80)
€2.42 - Sainsbury
€1.99 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 22%
Sugar
€1.27 - Sainsbury
€1.09 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 17%
Digestive Biscuits
€1.40 - Sainsbury (although they have their own brand at 35 cents)
€0.89 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 57%
Coke - 2 Litre Bottle
€2.55 - Sainsbury
€1.99 - Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 28%
Heinz Baked Beans
€0.88 - Sainsbury
€0.85 Gillens
Sainsbury dearer by 6%
Flora Oil (2 litres)
€4.47 - Sainsbury
€6.29 - Gillens
Gillens dearer by 45%
*I'll have to reinvestigate this one as the difference seems too much. Gillens has a one litre bottle at under €4 and I may have picked up the price of the Sainsbury one litre bottle.
Packet of Soup
€0.96 - Sainsbury
€1.10 - Gillens
Gillens dearer by 15%
Saxa Salt
€1.09 - Sainsbury
€1.39 - Gillens
Gillens dearer by 18%
Conclusion
Gillen's is cheaper in 7 items and Sainsbury is cheaper in 3 of the items.
For all ten items Gillen's is cheaper by an average of 9%
If I take out the Flora price as it seems too way out to be true, Gillen's would be cheaper by 15% on average.
So, if someone went to Sainsbury's shopping there would be the cost of the petrol, the cost of the time - and then they would throw a lot of it away.
And they would come with a car full of shopping which would have been 15% cheaper if they'd stayed home and shopped in Moville.
Update - 13/1/12
I just checked Sainsbury online and it is the 2 litre bottle of Flora cooking oil and not the 1 litre bottle of cooking oil that is €4.47 in Sainsbury's and €6.29 in Gillen's.
Gillen's, and other shops in the area, have done a great job in getting prices down over the past couple of years and are now cheaper than Derry, but it looks like there is still some work to be done with some products.
Maybe Flora or their distribuotrs need to be asked why they are selling it at such a different price to shops only 18 miles apart from each other.
