The Final Battle

Carnagarve

Last Friday night the group campaigning to stop the Sewage Treatment Plant being built at Carnagarve had a meeting at the GAA after it had been decided that the Sewage Treatment Plant would be sited at Carnagarve after all.

Their last chance is to appeal within 5 weeks.

A solicitor has been found in Cork who will fight this last battle with them - or at least give them a legal opinion on their rights.

Money

However, this is going to cost them 10 grand.

As they don't expect that many people outside the room would stump up for it, they decided that the 30 or so families represented in the room plus a further ten might stump up the money for this rearguard action.

They obtained the signed commitment of those in the room to stump up what might be €250 to €300 each.

Dignitaries

The group has an impressive number of local dignitaries in it including the Principals of both the Moville and Carndonagh Commuinty Colleges, Anthony Dougan and Paul Fiorentini as well as local GP Don McGinley and local schoolteacher and environmentalist Rose Kelly.

Oh and there's also Ireland's Greatest Man, John Hume.

Also at the meeting and in support were TDs Charlie McConalogue and Padraig MacLochlainn as well as Councillors John Ryan and Paul Canning.

Martin Farren, who has supported them before, was on holiday.

Rethink

It remains to be seen, though, whether all the king's horses and all the king's men can force An Bord Pleanala to have a rethink.

Form the outside it appears that the powers that be are determined to have the Sewage Treatment Plant at Carnagarve come hell or high water.

They seem prepared to throw any amount of money at it to have it at Carnagarve even though they originally put it there because because it was less expensive to have it there than further up the estuary.

They have now spent over a million of taxpayers money in order to have it there when the extra cost of the other option of further up the estuary was much less than the extra costs they have now incurred to have it at Carnagarve.

Also they could have had it in ages ago up the estuary instead of fighting a 21-year battle with the Carnagarve Group.

Surely they wouldn't spend all that public money just to spite the Carnagarve crowd would they?

Worst

Now we have the worst of both worlds with no Sewage Treatment Plant yet and over a million spent of taxpayers money in fighting to get it put in at Carnagarve.
