Teraways don't like A Gig Up the Duff

Teraways

A nice addition for DylanFest 2009 was the Open Mic gig in the grounds of the hostel at Gulladuff House.

It's a lovely picturesque environment for some open air music.

It can be viewed from a 6th century stone bridge over the trout filled River Bredagh.

People brought picnics along with them as well as some stronger refereshments.

Steph Buhe

Steph Buhe, from France, who has been a big attraction at DylanFests, played for his keep there as well as the Teraways who organised the event.

I counted over a hundred people at one point and there must have been in excess of 200 there in all.

It's not large for a concert but it's not bad for an Open Mic in a small town like Moville.

The Teraways put on another one at BeatlesFest 2009 but it was sparsely attended.

There was another one at DylanFest 2010 and I'm told there were about 30 at the one on the Saturday evening and when I came late on on the Sunday there was probably a dozen people there.

Not Promoted

The Teraways felt that it wasn't promoted enough and have produced small posters themselves and spread these around in Inishowen.

They use the iconic picture from the Sergeant Pepper cover except that they have replaced the faces of The Beatles with their own faces.

They called it the Teraways Beatles Extravaganza

Spiced Up

As the organiser of the BeatlesFest I thought I'd spice it up too.

So, I gave it a new name.

As it was in Gulladuff I re-christened it 'A Gig Up The Duff'.

Irreverent

I thought it's irreverence and play on words would have been liked by The Beatles, especially John who loved that kind of play on words.

He called his book A Spaniard In The Works.

At the height of Beatlemania when the fans couldn't hear the Beatles play for the screams John used to sing I Wanna Hold Your Gland (instead of Hand).

Inappropriate

However, the Teraways didn't think it was appropriate.

According to Marianne Ashcroft of The Teraways:-

"Up the Duff" may be catchy but it bears no relation to either The Beatles or the event that we have gone to a lot of trouble to promote.... HEAVILY... everywhere.. and it does not describe what the event actually is, at all.

Crude

"Moreover (in our opinion) it's crude and vulgar - not something we would care to put our names to or be associated with".

"We think "up the duff" is a name which doesn't give the right impression at all - "duff" after all is a euphemism for "useless", is it not?

"All we are requesting is that you abandon this nonsensical name that you have suddenly dubbed it with. It hasn't appeared up until now - why start?"

Which One

So, what name would John and the rest of The Beatles have preferred - The Teraways Beatles Extravaganza or A Gig Up the Duff?

Who better to ask than their road manager for all the years from the first hit to the last Tony Bramwell who is coming to the Beatlesfest on the Lough.

What did he think they would like better?

Replied Tony "Well that all sounds like fun. I'm looking forward to it. A Gig Up the Duff".

Fringe

However, The Teraways Beatles Extravaganza it's going to be.

It won't be part of the main festival but will be a fringe event.

The Teraways have practiced seven half hour sets and have learned more than 100 Beatles songs over the winter so there should be plenty of music.

Good Day

It will take place from 3pm to 8pm on both the Saturday and Sunday of the BeatlesFest.

It should be a good day out in a nice location especially if the weather is nice.

It's not part of the main festival but that shouldn't prevent you going along - especially as it's free.
