Review

I got a copy of the new Spring Tides CD the other night so I thought I would review it for those who haven't heard it yet.

1. About a Cow

Very good quick singalong type song. Nice bit of mandolin on it. Well constructed song, very Dylanesque with good lyrics and a great change up with the punchline of "We're Going Down". I would put it as 2nd best song on what is a very good CD. This one is even better live

2. Drunken Dreams

The second song is in the same genre as the first song but a little more in the country style, perhaps Country Rock. Very pleasant song with very good lyrics and well sung

3. Glasgow

Slower, mood music type song, with the excellent James McIvor singing. Lovely guitar work on the song. Once again excellent lyrics. This one grows on you. "Sticks and stones leave broken homes" - great line. It had the feelling of a Verve song and there were touches of Lennon in it especially in James's singing.

4. Promises

Another slower melodic song in the Simon & Garfunkel mould perhaps in the fashion of Poor Boy. Once again good lyrics and a very good song. This is another that it takes a few listens like Glasgow - a grower. That makes a good CD with some songs that hit you instantly and others that grow on you gradually as the instant ones are fading just a touch

5. The Comedown

They kept the best to last. This needs only one listen. Excellent articulation of the lyrics by James 'Jagger' McIvor. This kind of song really suits him as there is nothing he does better than spit out the bile, Jagger-style, with the best of them. Wonder if has the moves as well. Very good harmonica. All the singing is good on it.

Another great piece of guitar playing, perhaps the best on the CD, good drums too. If there is any criticism it is that perhaps the drums could be even stronger on this one.

This is a very, very good, raw, exciting song which stands comparison with any new songs I've heard this year. If a better songs has come out this year I haven't heard it. If they are going to release a single this would be the one with the first one About A Cow perhaps the other contender - although they're all good.

Several times I put the CD back on as soon as it had finished.

Talented

James O'Donnell is the main songwriter and a very talented one he is.

These guys have got the talent to go all the way.

The CD is selling at €5 in the shops and pubs but is virtually sold out except for a few copies in Rosatos.

They had 150 copies made.

They are going to get a fresh batch of 200 made so it could make a good (and inexpensive) Christmas present both for people living here and those abroad.

At a Euro a song it's good value.

Great Band

It was a great idea to get James McIvor to sing on a couple of songs especially the last one The Comedown.

He's perhaps the best singer in the area now that The Plea have vacated the place.

They're a great little band Spring Tides and all very talented.

They have been a breath of fresh air to the music scene in Moville since they started not so very long ago - like a tide washing over the Moville music scene in the spring.
