Moville Craic at Rawdons

Paddy McLaughlin and Sean 'Highboy' McLaughlin didn't let us down on Saturday night.

They play there every Saturday night and people know what they are going to get - and that's why they come in their numbers.

They very seldom disappoint.

Great Musicians

They take turns at singing with Paddy letting us hear some lesser heard songs and Sean playing the classics.

Paddy must, arguably, be the best musician in Moville and Sean can't be far behind.

In fact many of the younger musicians in the town were taught to play by Paddy in the first place.

Got Crowd Going

What Paddy and Sean are really good at is sensing the taste of the people in the upstairs room at Rawdons and satisfying it.

They got the crowd going once again.

Paddy has been playing since he was just a youngster and has always had music in his blood.

Internet Surfer

Indeed he has, I'm told, got a huge record and CD collection and is still downloading music like mad from the internet.

He has a great knowledge of music especially from the eras he prefers.

Caught Out

I remember one time, when there used to be an amateur musicians night in Rosatos, I played a song that I had written myself and someone asked me whose song it was.

Not wanting to say it was mine I thought quickly of some obscure musician whose total catalogue no one would know.

"It's by Loudon Wainright" I said.

"Loudon Wainright?" said Paddy. "That's not one of his. No, that's definitely not one of his".

I'll have to make someone up next time - except Paddy would probably say "I've never heard of him. Are you sure you've got the name right".

Guest Singers

One of the good things about Saturday nights at Rawdons is that they are very happy for guest singers and guitar players to come up and sing something.

I missed Leo McCauley who had a few songs just before I got in which is a shame because he's always good.

I did catch Martin Lynch who played and sung very well.

Surefire Hit

The new owners of Rawdons have a got a surefire, tried and tested, great Saturday night.

Paddy and Sean finished off with what appears to have replaced the Irish National Anthem in Moville as the last song of the night, Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".

The crowd whooped and hollered to this favourite of theirs.

And after that.....it was destination home.
