Santa came to Moville

Lights On

Santa came to Moville on Sunday night to turn on the lights on the Christmas Tree in the main square and in the town.

A big crowd had gathered when Santa arrived by Fire Engine at soon after 6pm.

I'm told that in one previous year Santa was much delayed as the fire engine had been called out to a chimney fire in Carn and the assembled Movillians had to wait patiently in the cold December evening air for Santa to arrive.

But not this year. He was here virtually right on time.

Traditional

This is a traditional event in Moville of some years standing.

Santa's Grotto is set up and every child in the town gets to go in and receive a small pack from Santa containing sweets, toys, things that you can blow and make a noise with (always popuar with kids), something to drink, something to draw on and a party hat.

Each child's hand is stamped to make sure that they don't come back twice (although at least one enterprising child, working on the principle that he has two separate hands, went back a second time).

Mulled Wine

The Carlton Hotel had provided a large amount of Fruit Punch and Mulled Wine which the Town Clock kept heated and served at their door. I sampled the mulled wine myself and can confirm that it warmed the heart.

It is always a heart warming evening in Moville when the lights get switched on. It reallY starts to feel Christmas-like after that.

Best Wishes

Our best wishes go out to Shauna McDermott, who was a helper on the night and who twisted her knee when her Teletubbies outfit was accidentally stood on. The ambulance had to be called to take her to hospital.

Shauna is in 1st year at the Moville Community College.

We wish her a speedy recovery.
