Pub trade in meltdown

Pub Trade

According to a new survey by the Drinks Industry, bar sales have fallen by 28% since the middle of 2007.

It's actually getting worse as their figures show a decline of 6.7% in just the first 9 months of the year and they expect that to be in double figures by the year end.

Lots more people are drinking at home now.

At Home

Even when they do come out, many are drinking in the house with friends on a Saturday night before coming out late.

Taxi drivers say that they used to pick up people to take them to the pubs but now they are picking them up to take them to a friend's place.

The cheap price of supermarket aclohol is a contributory factor as people have to count their coppers these days.

It is getting very quiet in the pubs during the week, especially early in the week.

The mooted 2% increase in VAT will make it even worse for the pubs.

Fewer Pubs

In 1896 there used to be 26 pubs in Moville when there were 400 fewer people.

It's within my own lifetime that there were 16.

Now there are only 10.

Some may see that as good and some as bad.
