Rawdons

After the big success of the Sean Ti round of the Songwriters Contest, the circus now moves on to Rawdons for the final heat on Friday.

This is literally the last chance for songwriters from the area and beyond to get songs into the contest which will be judged by the talent scout for The Beatles stable, Tony Bramwell who discovered James Taylor and Eva Cassidy amongst others and put on Jimi Hendrix's first ever major gig at the Savoy Theatre in Pccadilly, London.

He was also head of Polydor records when he had the Bee Gees, Slade, The Jam and Roxy Music in his stable, was responsible for the music in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, getting the Bee Gees to do it and was in charge of the music for several Bond films getting Paul McCartney to do Live and Let Die.

Talent Scout

Indeed, Tony tells me he still gets about 20 CDs a week sent to him.

He says he listens to the first track and if he doesn't like it he bins it.

If he does like it, he listens to the second and either bins it or continues listening till it either continues in a good vein or the quality drops off.

Acts

There are currently 7 acts due to appear at Rawdons and there are a few more 'maybes'.

This includes some big guns who have yet to appear, like String Fellas from Derry, Spring Tides and Gisle Lunde from Norway, now living in Dublin.

The numbers going through to the semis will depend on the number of acts turning up.

We put 6 out of 8 songs through at Rosatos and 9 out of 12 through at the Sean Ti.

Songs Through

The number of songs we put through is equivalent to the number of acts who turn up plus an extra two or three.

So, if 4 acts turned up singing 8 original songs we would put 6 songs through.

If 7 acts turn up singing 14 songs we would put 10 through.

If it is anything like the night at the Sean Ti then we are in for a treat - and then there's the semis and final to come.
