New Year's Eve in Moville

New Year

Most people were agreed that 2010 wasn't much of a year.

Most people also agreed that 2011 might be even worse.

Most people I spoke to haven't made any New Year's Resolutions.

Pubs Mobbed

However, they left all that aside over the festive period and especially on New Year's Eve when the pubs of the town were mobbed.

It's a great time of the year here.

You see faces that you haven't seen for months or even longer as people who are from Moville originally come back for Christmas and arrange to meet up with old friends in the pubs of the town.

Midnight Hour

However, once it comes near midnight all the pubs empty out and head towards the tree in the main square so that they can be there 'at the bells'.

The singer in Rosatos that night looked a bit askance as the pub, which had been full, emptied out into the night.

He's not from Moville so I explained the sudden exodus to him and told him that they would be back shortly.

Impromptu

It's a bit of an impromptu thing as nothing is organised other than the piped music coming from the Christmas Tree and usually someone in the crowd starts counting down.

I don't think anyone did it this year, or at least I didn't hear them, but suddenly everyone started shaking hands or hugging and kissing and wishing each other a Happy New Year.

It's a shame, actually, that a little bit more isn't done with maybe some live music from the back of the trailer with someone doing the countdown and then blasting out Auld Lang Syne or maybe even the church bells ringing out.

Great Occasion

However, it is a great occasion anyway.

I didn't stay too long after midnight and headed back to the pub on the hunch that they might be giving out champagne there like last year for the ones still there and I was proved right and got a free glass of bubbly.

Next Week

The pubs were still quite busy last night but there was speculation as to what it might be like a week from now.

However, it was great to have a couple of weeks or so away from the gloom.

And you never know as we have the film crowd coming to Moville shortly which should liven the place up a bit.
