Derry
My bank is the First Trust in Derry.
As I am there I get some shopping in Sainsbury's.
I get the bus down and the taxi back.
I usually spend somewhere between £120 and £200.
I reckoned that the money I saved on shopping there would save me enough money to justify the taxi home.
Comparison
However, after our price comparison between Gillen's and sainsbury's it turns out that it is actually cheaper to shop in Gillen's in Moville and I was losing money on most items.
So, yesterday's trip was very different.
All I bought was Indian food and pastries.
Bill
My bill was as follows:-
£6 Meal Deal
1 Chicken Tikka Massala
1 Chicken Jalfrezi
2 Pilau Rice
1 Bombay Potatoes - £1.15
1 Nan Bread - £0.59
6 Pain Au Raisin pastries - £5.10
6 Jam Doghnuts - £1.68
Total - £12.26
That's more than £100 less than I would normally spend.
I'll buy my other shopping in Moville this week.
Of course, one thing that is still much cheaper in Derry is alcohol - and Flora cooking oil for some strange reason.
Pleasure
One of the things I hate every week is trying to fit a week's worth of shopping into my fridge.
I start with throwing out a lot of the stuff the previous week that no one has eaten, to make way for the new stuff.
Some food you just can't fit in so i have to leave it out and hope it gets eaten quickly.
It was great not to have that problem this week.
Not Worthwhile
From both our article and the article on the front page of the Inishowen Independent this week, which showed that Supervalu in Buncrana is 19% cheaper than Sainsbury's, it shows that, except for some things like Alcohol, pastries and Indian food, it is not worthwhile going to Derry.
I checked Centra and prices there were no dearer than Derry.
I haven't checked the other shops in Moville and Greencastle like McFeeley's, Norris's, Terry's or McLaughlin's (I hope I haven't missed any out) but I would think that it wouldn't be worth going to Derry nowadays to shop.
It used to be cheaper and I think it was still in people's minds that it was cheaper but recent price comparisons have give the lie to that.
Boost
It would be a great boost to the town if most people shopped here for most of their food as every euro spent in an area circulates an average of 6 times giving 6 people or businesses a boost from it.
If Gillen's were to give their staff extra hours or had to hire more people because of extra business then those people might spend it in pubs and restaurants in the town or getting their hair done or getting some home improvements done.
The businesses in town need a boost - as we can see by the number of businesses closing.
