It's a Wonderful Life
The Bar-A-Cuda and its booking of strippers continues to divide and polarise opinion in Moville.
There was even a piece at the end of this week's Parish Bulletin that appeared to be critical of this type of entertainment without naming the Bar-A-Cuda specifically.
It said:-
The town appears to be split on the issue with some backing Mary Keogh who thinks that it gives a bad image of the town, that it is in danger of being known as the sleaze capital of Inishowen.
They worry about the image and the 'branding' of the town.
Potterville
I don't know how many of you have seen the classic Frank Capra film 'It's a Wonderful Life' starring James Stewart.
James Stewart plays the good guy who runs the Savings and Loans Company which gives housing loans to the small people who were paying rent in Old Man Potter's houses and who otherwise couldn't afford it.
Old Man Potter
Old Man Potter, the local bank and property owner, who was a mean old man, first tried to buy him so he could control the town and then tried to destroy him.
Things got so bad for James Stewart that he contemplated suicide and was going to jump off a bridge.
Never been Born
"I wish I'd never been born" he told an angel Clarence who had been assigned to him as he stood cotemplating jumping off the bridge.
"OK you've got your wish" Clarence said. "You've never been born".
Name Change
Of course James Stewart didn't believe him and he spent most of the rest of the film seeing how his home town of Bedford Falls was now that he had never been born.
People he had helped or saved had never been helped.
Strip Joints and Brothels
By now New Bedford was called Potterville, after Old Man Potter, and it was full of strip joints, casinos and brothels.
Indeed one girl that he helped by giving her money to go to New York was working there as she had never got the money from him.
Just The Start
This is the fear that those who oppose the strippers have, i.e. that this is just the start.
It started with male strippers last time and now it is both - male strippers The Wild Boys and female strippers The Pole Cats.
The fear is that they will have to get raunchier and raunchier acts to keep the audience.
Cashing In
The other fear is that if it is a success some other bars might be tempted to cash in by booking acts and the fear that Moville could become Donegal's Potterville and that the main tourists they get would be sex tourists - driving away the other visitors Moville gets.
Some of them would put the 'strange' in 'strangers'.
Prostitutes
"What would be next?" people ask.
Would there be prostitutes to take advantage of Moville's new image as Sleazeville?
Red Light District
Would there be a red light district of the town?
Perhaps the back street just behind The Bar-A-Cuda would be an ideal place.
They could buy out Martin Farren's Fish Shop.
The 'punters' leaving the raunchy strip shows wouldn't have far to go.
Tempted By Big Money
As in Potterville, might some of the young women of the town be tempted by the money to be made?
What would parents think when they are told by neighbours (or the garda) that their lovely daughters are 'turning tricks'?
Busy Garda
The garda would have to keep an eye out for 'action' in parked cars in the town.
You might see more than underage drinkers if you took a stroll down Bath Green.
It could all happen so easily.
If next week's show is successful then the Bar-A-Cuda would be having them perhaps more often than the 'every 5 or 6 weeks' that they are planning now.
Stripping CashFest
Might another pub be interested in having a CashFest that the strippers might bring?
If people from Carndonagh, Buncrana and even Derry knew that there were going to be sexually explicit acts every weekend in Moville that would attract the sleaziest elements of those towns to make a beeline for Moville every weekend.
There's a city of 250,000 people just 30 kilometres away, some of whom would want to come up for a 'dirty weekend' in Inishowen's Sleazetown.
Leering Strangers
Young Moville girls out for the weekend would be getting leered at and perhaps propositioned by guys who think they might be Moville prostitutes.
The more people that come, the more profits the pubs having them would make.
Sorely Tempted
The other pubs would be sorely tempted in bleak times in the winter or spring to put on some acts themselves to bring in some cash.
Even if they didn't they might be bought out by people who wanted to cash in on the new 'opportunity' in Donegal's Potterville.
Changed Pubs
Could you imagine Maguires and Rosatos under new ownership?
Both have flats above the pubs that might come in useful.
Could you imagine going in to Rosatos and 'good time girls' badgering you to buy them champagne or 'to come upstairs'?
Then Moville really would become Potterville - and there would be no way back.
