Moville loses its Councillor

Unrepresented

18 months or so ago Moville, a town of 1,402 people had a representative in the Dail and another on Donegal Council.

That's pretty good doing for a town of this size.

However, at the last election in October 2007 Cecilia Keaveney lost her seat in the Dail.

She got less than half of the votes in her home town of Moville (47%).

I'm told she was only 60 odd first preference votes from getting back in.

A higher vote in her home town would have seen her home.

Donegal Council

Now, it is almost certain that Moville will have no representation on Donegal Council unless Martin Farren can spring a surprise.

After the first tally of votes in the Errigal Hotel, Martin Farren was in 9th place and Marian McDonald was in 10th.

There are only 7 Inishowen seats in the Council so that puts them both in trouble.

The top 7 all have over a thousand votes.

Martin is on 800 odd and Marian has 700 odd.

Paul Canning in 7th place had over 1,200 votes in the tally.

Forlorn Hope

The only hope is if one of them goes out, if the people of Moville have en masse given their second preference vote to the other person, i.e. if they have Marian first and Martin second and vice versa.

However, that is a forlorn hope as they are a bit far back.

Moville will at a big disadvantage if no one from the town is on the Council.

It was very handy to have someone you see in the street or in the shops in a position of power.

In Action

I saw Marian in action getting the White Wall back up and getting the Putting Green and Crazy Golf open again.

I've also been able to ask Martin for help too and got his advice on how to make things happen.

Where would one go to now if both are out?

There's still Cecilia in the Seanad, so that's something.

But it is a shame that you won't bump into a local councillor in Gillen's shop or about the town unless Martin can spring a huge surprise.
