Moville in Open Revolt
Once again the people of Moville took to the streets to protest against the location of the new Sewage Treatment Plant at Carnagarve close to the beach at the bottom of Lafferty's Lane halfway between Moville and Greencastle.
Those who hanker nostalgically after the Piggery will almost certainly get a replacement whiff when the Sewage Treatment Plant becomes operational.
Let Down
From listening to the speeches at the protest and what was being said it seems that the protesters feel very let down by their elected representatives and they claim there was no consultation process that they know about.
They also claim that certain representatives were saying one thing to them whilst voting the opposite way.
Fair Play
It's probably fair that the Sewage Treatment Plant will be situated half way between Moville and Greencastle so that they can share the smell equally depending on the prevailing wind.
It seems that people are being told that there will be no smell emanating from their Sewage Treatment plant.
Non-Smell
This would make it the world's first non-smelling Sewage Treatment plant.
Perhaps it could be a great tourist attraction to help replace the previous tourists who don't like to holiday in places that smell like s**t.
Every Saturday
There were about 35 protesters there this Saturday.
They march every Saturday at 2pm and say they will continue to do so till the decision is reversed.
They match up and down between the Foyle Hotel and Gillens.
Lack of Publicity
One thing I will say though is that not that many Movillians know about the protest and what it is about.
I watched it mostly from across the road as I sipped a coke outside the Town Clock with my side kick Robbie.
Very few of those passing by knew what it was all about before I told them.
Determined
The protesters seem very determined to force the Council to back down.
Moville people don't demonstrate easily.
Indeed no one remembers any previous protests at all.
Further North
They want the Sewage Treatment plant situated further up towards the mouth of Lough Foyle or at least for the 'cleansed water' to go out into the middle of the Foyle rather than just by the beach.
It has to be said that no one disagrees about the need for a Sewage Treatment plant as raw sewage is entering the Foyle at several points including at Lafferty's Lane, Greeencastle and the River Row.
It has also to be said that most of the protesters appear to live near to Carnagarve or have building plots there.
Hasn't Caught Fire Yet
From what I can see it hasn't really caught fire with the general population of Moville - perhaps because many of them don't know about the demonstrations.
I only knew about them because I was walking up the town 2 weeks ago and saw all the placards outside Gillens.
Big Weekend Opportunity
It will be very interesting to see how many people will be on the march this weekend or giving support.
This is the weekend of Moville's big Traditional Music Festival when there will be big numbers of people from all over Donegal as well as from further afield in the town.
