Moville 2007

Story of the Year

The story of the year had to be the strippers in Moville and both the local and the national publicity for them.

It started off with a small item in the Moville Summer Festival programme which showed that there would be a Male Strip Act at the Bar-A-Cuda during the festival.

Trigger

This was the trigger that set the whole thing going.

It was first noticed and publicised by a front page story in the Derry Journal and was quickly followed by an appearance on Highland Radio by Festival Chairman Eddie Harkin and local Councillor Marian McDonald.

Demonstration

Then there was a small demonstration outside the Bar-A-Cuda on the night which made the front pages as well.

That's when Mary Doherty of the Christian Solidarity Party got involved.

Front Pages

There were further front pages at the next night of mixed strippers at the Bar-A-Cuda and a Bikini Barmaids Night at Maguires.

Indeed it ended up with Mary Doherty on national radio on Today FM.

Event of the Year

I would say that the Moville Celtic Sports & Fun day was a great day out.

It was a new event (or at least hadn't happened for years) and was both highly successful in terms of the money raised and in how enjoyable a day it was.

A lot of people had put a lot of hard work into it to make it the big success it was.

Throwback

It was a throwback reminder of how Moville used to be when there used to be Gymkhanas and Donkey Derbies in the Bay Field and the Sports Days in Bath Green.

It was so successful that the Moville Summer Festival has successfully asked for it to be incorporated in their programme.

Beaten to the Punch

They beat me to it as I was going to ask them if they wanted to put it on during the Saturday or Sunday of the DylanFest weekend.

You have to be up early to beat Moville Summer Festival Chairman Eddie Harkin though.

Moville Person of the Year

There was a late contender in Bronagh Holmes who has been nominated in the British Fashion 'Oscars' for Best New Designer of 2007.

However, I would have to say that the Person of the Year had to be Mary Doherty.

Leapt to Prominence

In the last elections she only beat Arthur, but the Moville strippers enabled her to leapfrog to both local and national prominence with front page appearances in the local papers and an appearance nationally on Today FM debating Moville's strippers with a DJ and lingerie Model.

In the process, she even panned local Parish Priest for (whilst condemning it) saying it was less important than some of Inishowen's other problems like deaths on the roads.

Most Significant Event of the Year

Probably the most significant event of the year was the meeting of the heads of all the Moville Committees.

Previously they had ploughed their own furrows, so to speak.

From now on they will be combining to publicise and market Moville to an outside audience to bring it back to the successful and thriving holiday town it used to be.

Moville Fashion Designer of the Year

I think we'll give that one to Bronagh Holmes.

Let's hope that there will be more awards to go with it in the future.

A Double

What a double that would be for her - the UK Fashion Industry's Best New Designer of the Year and the CraicOn.com Moville Designer of the Year award.

The world would be her oyster.

It wouldn't be a good idea to let Mary Doherty know when her next show was taking place, though, or there could be a catfight on the catwalk.
