DIRECTIONS

Moville is on Lough Foyle (near the fishing port of Greencastle) 20miles directly north of Derry (follow the R238) and 40miles north of Letterkenny in the Inishowen Peninsula of North Co. Donegal.

Moville is on Lough Foyle with many beaches, two piers and shoreside walk.

Local amenities include a large recreational “Green”, putting and crazy golf, tennis, bicycle hire.

The town has restaurants, music in pubs at weekends. Banks and ATMs, post office and health care centre and three churches.

There are regular festivals/events throughout the year.

When arriving in Moville town from Derry you turn left in the centre of the town at Market Square and travel along the Carndonagh/Malin road for 450 metres.

Some 50 metres before the Maxol Garage there is a Moville Holiday Hostel brown and white finger post sign on the left for the hostel which is in wooded grounds.

The access lane is parallel to the main road, where we share an entrance with Mill, and needs a sharp turn to left with another Hostel sign at the junction.

Proceed down this lane to the hostel for 40metres. Our main house is further down the lane and is all the one property.

There is ample parking around the property and we are 5 minutes walk from the town centre with a second pedestrian walk to the town across the old bridges.

STAYING

There is no curfew but all should respect other residents.

We would normally ask for key deposit and if there is damage we would request payment for repair/replacement.

The hostel charge includes all bed linen and use of all facilities (kitchen, TV & games rooms and utility room etc.) with tea/coffee provided.

There is a resident warden in the building.

Camping is available with use of all hostel facilities.

HISTORY

The hostel is largely of stone and on different levels and was converted from our old farm buildings and opened in 1993.

It is located in woodland and is within the 60km speed limit of Moville.

The building includes several en suite rooms, conservatory living room and has been restored keeping the original character yet with all required amenities.

Our nearby main house called “Gulladuff House” of the local Gulladuff Townland, is the oldest continually inhabited house in the area and predates the town of Moville, that was built largely since 1835.

This House, built on the site of two earlier houses, is from the 1700s.

Two rivers meet close to the hostel and in front of the house.

There are 4 bridges altogether and one can walk to the town over two of them.

Two are archaeological sites and one is reputed to be the oldest in Ireland and dated from the 6th century as built by St. Patrick.

It's associated with nearby 0.5km distant early Christian monastic settlement of Cooley Cross where there is a celtic cross (pre-Christian) and monastic ruins including a corbelled “skull hose” or oratory.

The Corn Mill with which we share our entrance, was originally part of the overall property.

The hostel and house are in woodland settings with two rivers on either side and a large pond on the other.

There is much wildlife including a rookery, bats, varied birds and frogs, badgers
and foxes.

There are several unusual and interesting trees, as well as wildflowers.

Two glens converge along the two rivers and join in front of the House.

The main Bredagh River has brown trout and occasional sea/white trout and guests are welcome to fish or paddle.
