Moville Gospel Choir

As I said in an earlier article I hadn't seen Moville's Gospel Choir before.

The main place where they play is in St. Pius Church where I am only an occasional visitor.

Also, as a style of music I wouldn't put Gospel up amongst the favourites.

Good Things

However, I had heard nothing but good things said about them and the audience at the church would be higher on the weeks when they are singing.

I'm not a fan of Stricly Come Dancing either and don't watch it on TV - although I know plenty do and love it.

They also had a very successful night recently which raised a lot of money for the GAA.

Not Strictly

However, it's not my cup of tea and I wasn't one of those clamouring for tickets - which got sold out pretty quickly.

Indeed I had marked down the Gospel Choir and Stricly Come Dancing as the two items on the card where I would take the opportunity to go to the bar or have a walk around.

Very Good

However, I waited, at least, till the Gospel Choir started - and I stayed with an empty glass throught the performance.

They were very, very good.

Choir Mix

As I said in a previous article I was surpised by the mix of the choir.

For some reason I thought that the Gospel Choir would be mainly male.

After all, you don't get many sopranos singing Ole Man River.

Girls

At a previous walk around the place a lttle earlier I has spotted some girls in black and red outfits in the main bar of the hotel.

"Must be some kind of convention" I thought. "Maybe airline stewardesses".

Then I spotted some guys in their blackshirts which confused me.

They couldn't be the pilots - especially as one of them was Leo McCauley.

Real Estate

Perhaps it was a works night out he was having.

The Real Estate business must be more buoyant than I thought.

Anyway, I realised who they all were when they came into the main function room.

Mostly Women

Twenty seven women and ten men I counted - not including the five guys in the band and the girl gesticulating wildly to them at the front.

I was guessing that Ole Man River would not be one of the songs.

Magnificent

They were magnificent.

They were all they had been cracked up to be.

Although it was a Gospel Choir the songs weren't all Gospel songs.

One or two might even be described as Indie.

Be Prepared

Next time there is one of these functions and the Gospel Choir are singing I'll make sure I have a full pint before they start.

It's making me question everything.

Might I even have enjoyed the Stricly Come Dancers if they had come along?
