Moville FC
Many years ago, my great uncle Joey McLaughlin, kept a diary.
My father has his diary from the years 1909-1910.
In it he names the date that Moville Football Club started.
The date was December 23rd 2009.
That means the hundredth anniversary is next Wednesday.
No Fanfare
It will come and go without fanfare.
It is thought that it didn't become Moville Celtic till the 1930s.
It is said by some that Moville Celtic came from another team in the town called Foyle Rovers who started earlier.
However, if there had been another team in the town surely Moville FC would have played them in their first year - and they didn't.
First Game
They played lots of teams in their first year.
Their very first game was against Carndonagh on January 1st 1910 - which it states on a later diary page they lost 4-3.
It names the team - as well as the teams for other matches they played in the first year.
Shame
It's a shame that there is nothing being done to celebrate the great day.
Perhaps, as the first game was not played till January 1st of 1910 that 2010 could be claimed as a centenary year and events organised.
You don't get many chances to celebrate centenaries.
