Moville Festivals & Events
February
This is the 3rd Traditional Music Festival in Moville and the first two were a huge success.
This year the four pubs involved will be Rawdons, the Bar-A-Cuda, the Foyle Hotel and Rosatos.
The Foyle Hotel will be the hotel of choice for the festival and many of the acts and performers will be staying there.
There will be four traditional musicians playing in each pub all day and each evening at the Festival.
March
This is one of the big events in the Moville calendar and pulls out a huge crowd to watch the parade.
As it's on a Monday this year there will likely be entertainment put on in the pubs all weekend for those that want to come for it.
Not to be missed.
June
This is more than just a display of Vintage Agricultural Machinery (although it is that too).
It is a major event in the Moville calendar.
I've suggested in the past that it could be re-titled the Moville Fayre as it has people in period costumes selling their wares as well as lots of fun things to do - especially for children.
An excellent day out for the family.
July
This was an even bigger success in its first year than anybody expected.
Even though there was only 7 weeks from the idea to the roll out, news of it spread throughout Ireland fast.
We had bands and musicians from Belgium, France and England as well as Ireland performing in the streets and in the pubs all weekend.
It was featured in Downtown Radio, Foyle Radio, ICR and I was even on the Dave Fanning Show talking about it for 6 or 7 minutes.
It was also reported in HotPress, the Mirror and the Star as well as in all the local newspapers.
Rawdons and Rosatos had their best Saturday nights ever and the Town Clock tripled its normal Saturday business and quadrupled its Friday business.
McGettigans ran out of beer and the Bar-A-Cuda ran out of Tennents.
Goodness knows how Maguires did as the outside events were right outside their door.
Seamy's chip shop was pandemonium for 3 hours on the Sunday - and not local person came in.
News of the success of the first one has been spreading since and it is confidently expected that next year's will be even bigger and better.
Jul 6th - Moville Vintage Car Rally
This coincides again with the Sunday of the DylanFest.
There's always good weather for it.
If you want to see a whole load of vintage cars come to Moville and take a look.
I must say I was taken aback when I saw my first ever car a Triumph Herald Convertible, of which I was very proud, in amongst the vintage cars.
Jul 18th - 20th - BeatlesFest on the Lough
This has been moved in the calendar from mid-September to the more favourable mid-July slot.
It wasn't as big a success as the Dylanfest in 2007 but it took place when everybody had gone back to school, university, college and work.
It still was like a good bank holiday weekend, though and many pubs, restaurants and hotels did well out of it.
Jul 26th to 27th - Shrove Regatta
Shrove is a beautiful spot in Donegal with its sandy beaches and countryside.
It's an excellent spot for a Regatta and there are many good holiday homes for let in the area.
Jul 30th to Aug 4th - Moville Summer Festival (click here for details)
This is Moville's big festival of the year - the jewel in its crown.
If you are thinking of taking a holiday in Moville for a week or so this is the time to do it.
As well as having music in the street they will have a whole plethora of events all day long and at night and all the pubs will have late licences for the duration of the festival.
August
A whole series of events will take place just off the pier in Moville.
The date coincides with the Moville Summer Festival and there is always a big crowd for Moville's Regatta - which has been running for many a year.
Aug 3rd - Foyle Rowing Club Rowing Race (click here for details)
The Foyle Rowing Club are running their events to coincide with the Moville Summer Festival and Regatta weekend and will be running a mouth watering series of rowing events.
Aug 4th - Raft Race (click here for details)
The Raft Race is one of the highlight of the year in the Moville Calendar.
The rafts start the race in the protected bay area and then have to come around the pier for the rest of the race.
When the water's a bit choppy it can resemble The Grand National for all the 'fallers'.
There are rescue boats on standby though to fish out the less skilled (or unlucky) rafters.
The raft race is always very well supported and there is always great excitement as the orders are given to pull the rafts to the starting line.
Aug 8th to 10th - Greencastle Regatta
Greencastle is famed for its fishing, its fishermen and its boats.
It is a beautiful little fishing village just 3 miles up the road from Moville.
It also has the well reknowned seafood restaurant Kealys, frequented by the rich and famous (as well as many of the locals).
Book in advance though - especially if you want to eat well on regatta weekend.
Aug 30th - Moville Heat of the Donegal Grand Prix 10km Race (Men & Women)
December
This is a fantastically magical event and I wouldn't miss it for the world.
The Christmas tree lights are lit in the main square of Moville, Santa arrives by Fire Engine and the children of Moville all get to meet him and get a bag of goodies from him.
