Martin Farren
I had thought that County Councillors normally swanned around looking important and just turned up for set piece events for 'photo opportunities'.
I thought they got other people to do work.
So, it was strange, after I had finished my game of tennis this morning, to see Martin Farren with the old rubber gloves on, just at the edge of the car park down The Green.
Picking Up
"What could he be up to?" I wondered.
I surprised to see that he was picking up the rubbish from the day before so that visitors and Movillians alike could enjoy a pleasant suinny day in Bath Green on BeatlesFest weekend.
That's what's called getting your hands dirty (I know he had rubber gloves on, but you know what I mean).
Problem
Rubbish has been a problem in that area of the Green.
They say that people strew rubbish around.
However, from what I've seen it is mostly the crows.
People do put rubbish in the bins but is hauled back out again by the crows if it is is the remains of a picnic or a bag of fish and chips.
Intelligent
It is mainly they who strew it about the place.
Crows are supposed to be very intelligent creatures it has been revealed recently and so far they have outsmarted any attempt to stop them doing this.
What would be needed would be crow-proof bins - ones they couldn't get into to haul out the rubbish.
Martin Farren
Anyway, in the interim, it was good to see Martin down there sorting it all out.
I remember Marian used to do all the Tidy Towns stuff as well when she was in.
She was also instrumental in getting the Putting Green Cafe and Crazy Golf (if not yet the Putting Green) open again and getting the White Wall back up again.
A Treat
With such a beautiful day anyone coming over on the ferry or coming down from Derry are in for a treat to see the Green in such a good state and as presumably the Council workers not working on a Sunday morning, Martin has stepped in to fill the gap to get the rubbish in its proper place.
Maybe they could look into getting crow-proof bins to keep those clever creatures out - and then Martin can have a lie in on a Sunday morning.
