Home
I was out having a few drinks on Friday night and thinking it very quiet.
"What's it going to be like after August is over" I said to one of the bar staff "If it is as quiet as this on a bank holiday Friday in the North in late August."
After a couple of pints I thought I'd take myself home and left the pub.
Check Out
On the way home I thought I'd look in on a couple of other pubs to see if there was any 'action' there.
Maguires was on my way home so I thought I'd look in the door.
Maguires used to be an up-market pub, maybe the most upmarket pub, but I'd heard that a couple of years ago that it had gone down market so I'd rarely voyaged in there in recent years except occasionally.
I hadn't been in there on a Friday for years.
People About
There seemed to be a few people in so I went in the door.
It was thronged.
I reckon there was over a hundred people there.
There wasn't even any band or DJ on as far as I could see.
I think it must have been jukebox music.
Not Rough
As I looked around I saw people that I'd seen before at other places.
It wasn't rough at all.
The crowd that were there were quite an upmarket crowd if anything.
The rough crowd must have moved on elsewhere.
Younger Crowd
It must be said that I looked a little out of place.
The crowd were all younger than I was.
Even Benny wasn't there.
But it wasn't the very young crowd.
Good Place
However, I would have to say that it was the kind of place that I would have gone to in my younger days.
It may even be a place I'd like to go even now.
In 2008 I did a Pub of the year (Rawdons) and restaurant of the Year (Rosatos) but I didn't do one for 2009.
I think if I do it this year then the very likely early favourite would be Maguires.
I wonder what a Saturday night is like.
Quality
In a downturn people go to quality.
The weak pubs and restaurants suffer in a downturn and go to the wall.
Don't let people tell you that people don't come out any more on Friday night and that it is deadly quiet in Moville.
The only reason that they think that is because the crowd is all in Maguires.
Successful Owner
I remember asking the owner of one successful pub in Moville when he sold his place which pub her would take in Moville if he was given it free and he answered straight away "Maguires" and the main reason he gave was location.
However, it is not just location.
They are putting on a good show there and deserve their success.
Good luck to them!
I might even go back there myself.
