Cheaper
Last week we published a story comparing the prices of goods in Sainsbury's in Derry and Gillen's in Moville.
We showed that for most items it is cheaper to shop in Gillen's than Sainsbury's.
This week the Inishowen Independent has picked up on our story and compared Sainsbury's to Supervalu in Buncrana and found that Supervalu was much cheaper than Sainsbury's by a whopping 19%.
Assumption
Most people assume that it is much cheaper shopping in Derry and i was astonished to find that I was blowing my money by shopping there.
From now on I'll just get items that I can't find in Moville like thick double cream, and items that are cheaper like alcohol and pastries.
Of course, people will say that Sainsbury's is dear compared to other shops in Derry but even if the other supermarkets were 19% cheaper it still wouldn't be worth the bother and the cost of going to Derry to do the shopping when many of the items would be cheaper here.
There's also the fact that people say that they throw out a lot of the food that they buy in Derry whereas if they shopped every couple of days in Moville they would hardly throw out any.
Good for Everybody
Of course, any money spent in Moville circulates in Moville.
The Circulation of Money theory states that every Euro spent in an area circulates an average of 6 times doing six people a bit of good.
With pubs, restaurants and businesses closing it looks like Moville needs every euro spent there that it can get.
The cavalry are coming in the shape of Mike Murphy's Moo-licious which will employ 30 people, the Clipper Race in July when thousands of visitors are expected here and Derry's City of Culture next year when they expect 2m extra visitors and Moville and Greencastle will get a knock on effect.
However, till they happen Moville needs people to spend here - and they would be saving money anyway by doing it.
PS our calculation didn't even take into account the shocking euro / sterling conversion rate which was 78p on Tuesday(I was using about 83 cents to the pound).
This would make Gillen's even cheaper against Sainsbury.
I used €1.20 Euros to the pound when Sainsbuty actually use €1.28 so at least one item that I had as cheaper at Sainsbury's would actually be cheaper at Gillen's.
