Inishowen Independent
The battle of the local papers has ended it seems.
When the Inishowen Independent first came out it came out on the day before the Inish Times which came out on a Wednesday.
Recently the Inish Times switched to the Tuesday as well.
Same Day
That meant that three out of Inishowen's weekly newspapers came out on the same day - Tuesday.
Something had to give.
The Tuesday Journal wasn't much affected.
However, sales of the Inish Times and Inishown Independent had gone down perhaps by 20% to 25%.
Not Happy
Local newspaper outlets were not happy either and couldn't see the point of them both coming out on the same day.
There were some tentative signs that the Inny Inny was being slightly less badly affected than the Iniish Times.
However, the smart money was on the Inish Times to survive as they had the strength of the group behind them and could see out a loss of sales for a longer period than the Inny Inny.
Thursday
Something had to give as both newspapers were unlikely to survive if they continued to come out on teh same day.
Newsagents were saying that they would prefer if one of them came out on the Thursday.
They reckoned that this would maximise sales for them.
The Inny must have listened as that is exactly what is going to happen.
Good Move
Of course, it would have been exhilarating to have a battle to the death with the Inish Times and refuse to budge.
However, that didn't make any sense and so the Inny has done the sensible thing and switched to Thursday.
It could be a good move.
Previously they came out on the same day as the Tuesday Journal.
Now they have a day of their own.
New Slant
OK, it's only a couple of days after the Inish Times comes out but they will have a copy of it in their hands before they go to print and can highlight newer stories more or put a different slant on stories that the Times has published.
Newsagents will be happy and Inishowen has a very good chance of having two local newspapers survive as well as the Inishowen version of the Derry Journal.
Makes Sense
All round it makes sense.
The Inny has done the right and sensible thing.
