Council Elections

Seven Seats

First Count

2,131 - Padraig MacLochlainn (SF) (elected)
1,899 - Bernard McGuinness (FG)
1,749 - McConologue (FF)
1,649 - Doherty
1,427 - Donaghy
1,339 - Ryan
1,227 - Canning (FF)
956 - Crossan (Ind)
881 - Farren (Lab)
733 - McDonald (FF)
703 - Rolsten (FG)
677 - Ruddy (SF)
487 - McMahon (Green)
237 - Connell (Ind) (eliminated)

It's not looking good for the Moville candidates as Martin is 346 votes out of the crucial 7th place and Marian is even further back. Moville doesn't look like it will have a councillor. That will be disastrous for the town.

Second Count

1,921 - McGuinness
1,768 - McConologue
1,690 - Doherty
1,442 - Donaghy
1,350 - Ryan
1,235 - Canning
994 - Crossan
950 - Farren
758 - McDonald
740 - Ruddy
705 - Rolsten
497 - McMahon (eliminated)

Not a bad count for Martin but not good for Marian.

Third Count

1,943 - McGuinness
1,786 - McConologue
1,711 - Doherty
1,508 - Donaghy
1,409 - Ryan
1,250 - Canning
1,069 - Crossan
1,015 - Farren
776 - McDonald
775 - Ruddy
718 - Rolsten(eliminated)

Martin's getting a bit better but Marian isn't getting many second votes so far.

Fourth Count

2,042 - McGuinness (elected)
1,809 - Doherty
1,795 - McConologue
1,779 - Ryan
1,516 - Donaghy
1,303 - Canning
1,077 - Crossan
1,031 - Farren
784 - Ruddy
782 - McDonald

That was better for Canning. It's pushed Martin further back for the vital 7th seat. Marian's now in big trouble as she's slipped 2 behind Ruddy in 11th and currently last place. The next count has only 31 Bernard McGuiness redistributable votes to be counted next and she needs to take a few of those to jump ahead of Ruddy.

Fifth Count

1,823 - Doherty
1,796 - McConologue
1,793 - Ryan
1,516 - Donaghy
1,304 - Canning
1,077 - Crossan
1,031 - Farren
785 - Ruddy
782 - McDonald (eliminated)

Marian's out. It looks too much for Martin to do - but a lot depends if Moville people voted Marian first and Martin second. Marian's votes are going to be redistributed. Will they go to Martin or the Fianna Fail candidate Paul Canning?

Sixth Count

1,944 - Doherty
1,801 - Ryan
1,606 - Donaghy
1,344 - Canning
1,228 - Farren
1,086 - Crossan
Ruddy (eliminated)

Martin got 197 of Marian's votes and Canning of Fianna Fail got only 40. He's back in the fight. Can he do it? He's still 116 behind. But who with Sinn Fein's second votes go to? Someone told me they mostly don't go anywhere except other Sinn Fein candidates. We shall see.

Seventh Count

2,042 - Doherty (elected)
2,137 - McConologue (elected)
1,835 - Ryan
1,637 - Donaghy
1,358 - Canning
1,320 - Farren
1,140 - Crossan (eliminated)

Only 38 behind now. Martin picked up 92 Sinn Fein votes whereas teh Fianna Fail candidiate, who might have expected to get them, got only 14. Who will Independents give their second vote to - Labour or Fianna Fail? There's rumours that Martin has beaten Canning by 1 vote according to ICR.

Eighth Count

2,134 - Ryan (elected)
1,928 - Donaghy
1,428 - Canning
1,427 - Farren

Oh my God! Martin is one behind, not one ahead. It was misinformation. There is still the 126 votes to be redistributed of McConologue's vote. Surely Martin isn't going to lose by just one vote or something similar. All those in Moville who didn't turn out to vote are going to be feeling very guilty.

McConologue is Fianna Fail like Paul Canning but he is from North Inishowen like Martin Farren. Which will have the greater effect? This is nail biting.

There's also John Ryan's extra votes - and geograpically they would be likely to go to Paul Canning. Martin needs to have a good lead after McConalogue's redistribution.

It's a toss up.

Ninth Count

1,938 - Donaghy
1,440 - Canning
1,440 - Farren

Oh ny God! They're level. When they announced that the first two had an extra 20 and 12 I thought Martin must have romped it as there were 126 votes to be redistrubuted. However, 81 were non distributable.

It seems that Paul Canning is likely to get the John Ryan extra votes as he is closer to him geographically. The pendulum has now swung against Martin. Is he really going to just miss out after all his efforts to get elected three times?

If it finishes close there could well be a recount tomorrow.

Phew!

Tenth Count

2,003 - Donaghy
1,480 - Farren
1,434 - Canning

That was a surprise. Martin took 40 of the 123 Ryan votes against just 14 for Canning even though gegraphically Canning was nearer Ryan than Martin Farren. Martin is in 7th place for the first time on the 10th count (it may be 11th as I think I missed Padraig MacLoachlaiin's redistribution).

There's just one more redistribution to go.

Eleventh Count

2,009 - Donaghy
1,499 - Farren
1,460 - Canning

He's done it. he is now 39 clear of Canning and Canning has conceded. Moville will have a Councillor after all. That's amazing. Martin came from so far back and from 9th place. He was 346 behind Canning after the 1st Count.

He really is the Comeback Kid of Irish politics.

He has, quite literally, come back from the dead.

Drama

What drama!

But he's there!

He'll be taking his seat on Donegal Council.

He's waited a long time for that.

It was a long labour before he got there (apologies) but he's there now.

He'll be absolutely delighted.

It's just a shame that Moville couldn't have two councillors.

However, a short time ago it looked like we wouldn't have any at all.

We WILL be represented.
