How I didn't win €2,200

Winner

I got a call on Monday night from one of the GAA Lottery organisers.

It seems the name Gerry McLaughlin came out of the hat (or whatever) to win their prize and they wanted to know if it was me.

To my knowledge there is only one other Gerry McLaughlin in town.

Surprise

It came a a bit of a surprise to me.

I hadn't even bought a ticket!

I told him this.

However, he wasn't convinced by that.

Forgetful

Did I buy a ticket somewhere?

I've been getting a bit forgetful recently - but surely I would remember buying a lottery ticket.

I knew that the weekly winner got either €30 or €50 - not sure which.

It would have been useful - but it wasn't me and I told him so.

Finding Out

I didn't think any more about it till I was in a shop up town.

"I see you nearly won €2,200" someone said to me.

After a second or two of confusion it clicked.

It seemed that his was the prize that was won and not €30 or €50.

Maybe It Was

"Did they get who won it?" I asked wondering if it was possible that I did buy it but didn't remember buying it (e.g. late on on Saturday night).

But yes they had found their man out at Gleneely.

Good luck to him.

What If

I wondered what would have happened if I had said "Yes, that's me. I'm Gerry McLaughlin".

Maybe the other guy would never have found out.

Did it matter that I didn't have a ticket?

I could just say that I couldn't find it.

Downside

However, there is a downside.

Whoever sold it to him might have remembered.

Even worse would be if I took the money and then the real winner came forward later with the ticket.

Maybe people in Moville wouldn't find out that I had done it (that was a joke by the way).

Look At Him

People would be pointing you out in the street (more than at present).

There wouldn't be a single person over the age of three who wouldn't hear about it and form an opinion - all the way up to Greencastle.

Grown

Being Moville it would probably have become €22,000 or €220,000 before the news even passed the main square.

I think that's the main reason that there is so little crime in Moville - there's just no point.

Conjecture

Of course, I have to just point out that this article is just conjecture and that it never crossed my mind, even for a moment, to say that it was me who won the money.

Just a little flight of fancy, if you know what I mean!
