Greyhound Racing
My father, Gerry snr., is over on a visit just now.
I don't remember how the subject came up but I was surprised to hear him say that there used to be Grehound Racing in the Bay Field sixty years ago.
It seems that they laid out a track and they used a blue van to pull 'the hare'.
They removed a front wheel, propped it up and attached the skin of a real hare to it.
The van would start up and then they would let the greyhounds loose around the track.
It seems that people would yell "quick, quick, speed up" as regularly the greyhounds would be catching up with the van.
Indeed, once a greyhound leapt straight into the front seat alongside a startled driver.
That must have been a pretty smart greyhound.
Horse Racing
It seems that there also used to be Horse Racing in the Bay Field fifty years ago.
It was always a great laugh, I'm told, and none too clean.
It was always held on the day after the Regatta.
There were football tournaments taking place as well as running races on Moville's Sports and Fun Day which was revived recently.
Moville must have been a pretty fun place all those years ago.
