Talent

Not too long ago people were saying that there few people playing music about the town who were under thirty.

One thing that did start was the Up Scene which gave youngsters the opportunity to play in public using the best sound equipment and musical equipment.

They met every week in the small Function Room at the Caiseal Mara and played there.

Soon they were ready to go out on the road and they went out to pubs and other venues and they all sung and played there.

They were mentored by George McCormick and Leo McCauley amongst others including the ICR team.

Success Stories

Quite a few of those now playing about the town, like James & Niamh and Debbie McDaid and Geraldine Cavanagh came through the ranks there.

Most of the youngsters were pupils of Moville Community College where they were given opportunities to express themselves and play music.

Indeed they had a talent contest just the other week organised by James & Niamh, as well as the school.

There were around 30 entrants.

Talent

James & Niamh are now playing regularly about the town and now further afield as fame beckons for the two 16-year-olds.

Jessica Harkin, who I think is 14 but may be 15 now won 2nd place at a talent contest in Rawdons.

Recently Debbie McDaid and Geraldine Cavanagh won 2nd place in Moville's songwriter competition, just missing out against Lawrence Hackett from Cork and finishing just ahead of Sean O'Neill who had come up from Dublin as well as all the other contestants.

School Contest

Debbie and Geraldine went in for the school contest and finished 2nd in that too.

This time they lost out to young Eimar Lafferty who sang like a nightingale and secured the most votes from schoolmates to take the contest - another star awaiting to expode in Moville and beyond.

No wonder Beatles talent spotter, Tony Bramwell, keeps coming back to Moville.

He might just find another Eva Cassidy or James Taylor here.

School Productions

Many of the youngsters have sung at school productions and also in the Pantomime at Christmas.

Moville Community College College, the Up Scene and the Panto have invested a lot of time and effort into nurturing the town's and the area's musical talent and now it is paying big dividends.

French Translation

My son recently, when doing his French homework asked me what 'ville' meant in English.

i told him it meant 'town'.

He paused and said "So, Moville is really Motown".

"That's right" I told him, "that's right".

With all the musical talent pouring out (and I haven't even mentioned Spring Tides yet who have brought their version of Beatlemania to the town, Spring Fever) as well as all the musical festivals and shows we have here now, Moville is becoming like a mini Motown.

Perhaps we should twin ourselves with Detroit.
