Jumping Jellyfish
I had been told that Jumping Jellyfish were Derry's top covers band.
That's a high accolade as Derry is full of musical talent.
However, I'd never seen them play.
I recommended them to the Town Clock based on reputation alone - and I wasn't disappointed.
Top Class
It wasn't the whole band who came but the two main ones Oisin and Baz.
They were excellent.
I would say that they are one of the best acts to play in a Moville pub that I've heard.
I'd put them up there in the same class as acts like The Plea, the early Stratospheric and The Sick and Indigent Song Club at last year's BeatlesFest.
Michael Murphy at the Bar-A-Cuda will be rubbing his hands that he managed to book them for tonight after the Cannibals cancelled and Jumping Jellyfish had a late gig cancellation.
Tony Bramwell
Half way through their act Tony Bramwell, The Beatles childhood friend, road manager and head of Apple Records and films, got up to give a talk followed by a question and answer session.
It's always difficult to do something like that in a pub, especially when the music stops, but Tony held them spellbound as they threw question after question at him.
Shame
It was just a shame that there was a bunch of three girls who kept talking all the way through it despite frequent requests from others in the audience to keep quiet.
One of them even went up behind the bar during a break in the music to change the jukebox from Beatles music to Disco music.
Why did they come to a BeatlesFest?
However, that was an irritation but it didn't ruin it.
Signed Copies
Afterwards Tony had several requests to buy signed copies of his book Magical Mystery Tours: My Life With The Beatles and went round and had a chat with various people in the pub who eagerly asked him more questions.
He will be appearing again tonight this time in the Caiseal Mara where he will give a talk and give a Q&A during a break in the set by the headline band from Belfast Colenso Parade.
Rosatos
It seems that Rosatos was mobbed last night as well where Paul Bredin and Damian McGonigle played and, although I wasn't there myself I'm told it was hard to get in the door.
It all bodes well for the big night the Saturday night when there will be Beatles acts in Caiseal Mara, Bar-A-Cuda and Rosatos as well as a Beatles DJ in Maguires.
