Grabbers
As you would know from our previous articles, the comedy horror film Grabbers is to be made in Moville in January using locations like the Anchor Bar.
It seems that a local policeman (like the guy in Jaws) in a sleepy, idyllic, rural village (according to the Press Release) gets a rude awakening when a giant alien squid like creature (like Jaws) begins to attack the locals - but only the ones who don't drink as the creatures don't like the taste of alcohol (my son asked "why is it coming to Moville then?).
One feels that we should make a list of such people before the 'creature' arrives so that it doesn't bother the rest of us who like a tipple.
Great News
This could be great news for Moville.
The script for the movie says the action takes place in a 'sleepy, idyllic, rural village'.
They've picked Moville as the best place in Ireland to film that idyllic place.
That's a great boost for us and a tremendous compliment.
Opportunity
It is also a tremendous opportunity.
The town and island of 'Amity' in Jaws was actually Matha's Vineyard in Massachussetts off Cape Cod.
Even though it was already famous as where the Kennedy's had their summer residence, the island and town got a huge surge in visitors which continues to this day.
I went on honeymoon to Martha's Vineyard and the guide on the boat there told us all about it as we all looked over the side.
Wikipedia
Indeed the Wikipedia page for Martha's Vineyard says the following:-
"In 1974, Steven Spielberg filmed the movie Jaws on Martha's Vineyard. Spielberg selected island natives Christopher Rebello as Chief Brody's oldest son, Michael Brody; Jay Mello as the younger son, Sean Brody; and Lee Fierro as Mrs. Kintner.
"Scores of other island natives appeared in the film as extras.
"Later, scenes from Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge were filmed on the island as well".
GrabbersFest
In June 2005 the island celebrated the 30th anniversary of Jaws with a weekend-long Jawsfest.
Hey!
There's another potential festival for Moville - GrabbersFest!
Wouldn't that be something?
Jaws Moville
If this film becomes a success then we could see something similar in Moville.
It is unlikely to be as big as Jaws but if it was any kind of success it would be a huge boost to the town.
Wikipedia also says about it "The film's script has been highly regarded within the film industry and was listed on the 2009 UK Black List".
We could certainly use it on any publicity about the town.
I would certainly use it in trying to sell the DylanFest and BeatlesFest in Moville to people abroad.
2012
It is also likely to come out in 2012 - the year of the Clipper Race in Greencastle and the year before the City of Culture in Derry.
I'm sure a lot of visitors would want to nip up from Derry to see the place where the film Grabbers was made.
It might be an idea to have a scuplture of the sea creature made.
Maybe we could offer to buy the creature from the film makers and stick it in the Maritime Museum.
It's supposed to be short of funds and that could give it a huge boost.
Pint
Whisper it, but visitors to Derry might want to have a pint in the bar where the film was made - the Anchor / Hair of the Dog.
It might be a good time to think of reopening it again.
The 'Cheers' Bar in Boston which was connected to the hit comedy series of the same name still does a roaring trade and is a must for visitors to Boston.
Good Things
If this film makes it big then so does Moville.
A number of good things have happened to Moville recently like the award of the Clipper Race to Derry, the City of Culture 2013, Project Kelvin in Derry and the cross-border Science Park, and now a potentially hit film.
Things are looking bad here for now but there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful for the future.
Start smiling again!
