IT Jobs

The number of jobs in most sectors in Ireland are tumling as are pay rates.

There is one sector that it bucking the trend and that is IT.

According to the Central Statistics Office 74,900 people are employed in IT compared to 74,000 a year ago.

This number has been going up all the way through the downturn.

Salaries

Salaries for those with less than 2 years experience vary from €26,000 to €31,000.

Those with 5 years experience or more are earning €52,000 to €63,000.

If they become IT Contractors they can do even better with average rates of IT contractors around €350 a day.

No Jobs

It's heartbreaking to see all those young people about Moville who have degrees but have been unable to get work in their chosen careers.

Those taking IT degrees stand a much better chance of employment.

Another problem we have here is that our children, once qualified, have to leave here to get work.

However, in IT, there are quite a few IT jobs going in Derry and, if things go right, there could be many more in the future.

Project Kelvin

The reason is Project Kelvin which has given Derry superfast internet broadband connecitivity speeds comparable with anywhere in the world.

The next step is that they are going to start a Science Park on the Derry / Donegal borders starting with a massive datacentre.

This will mean that companies who need to process lots of transactions very quickly, like the big banks, brokers, mortgage comapneis and insurers would be able to operate out of Derry / Donegal - if they can be attracted.

If this Science Park is a success there could be loads of IT jobs coming to Derry - and not just it jobs as other areas like Life Sciences would benefit.

So, if someone wants a good chance of a job earning plenty of money where you may not have to travel further than Derry to work then it would be worth looking at a career in IT.
