Top Jobs
There had been a clamour in the past few years that said that more management jobs should go to English managers in the Premiership in England.
Many people have also said that the England team manager job should go to an Englishman.
They can't really complain too much as they have 13 of the 20 Premiership management jobs going.
They can't really complain either that none of them have got the England job.
13-7
There are 7 non-English managers and 13 English managers.
The 7 foreign managers hold positions 1-7 in the table.
The English managers hold positions 8-20.
Top 7
Here are the top 7 and their country of origin:-
Man Utd - Alex Ferguson - Scotland
Chelsea - Gus Hiddink - Holland
Liverpool - Rafa Benitez - Spain
Aston Villa - Martin O'Neill - N. Ireland
Arsenal - Arsene Wenger - France
Everton - David Moyes - Scotland
West Ham - G. Zola - Italy
Winners
Of course, you could say that the English managers haven't been given the jobs with the top clubs but that is because they have hardly won anything between them.
Alex Ferguson won the European Cup Winners Cup with Aberdeen beating Real Madrid in the final and then won the Supercup. He also won 3 titles with Aberdeen in Scotland.
Hiddink has won titles in Holland and elsewhere, whereas Benitez won the Spanish championship twice with Valencia and the Uefa Cup.
Martin O'Neill won three titles with Celtic and took them to the UEFA Cup final losing in extra time to Mourinho's Porto.
Newcomers
Zola hasn't won anything as it is his first year in management but he shows how a manager of a smaller team can still do pretty well.
At the top of the Championship you've got Mick McCarthy's Wolves and Alex McLeish's Birmingham not too far away and they could well be both promoted.
Stop Press Update
Since I wrote the article I've found that there is one more non-English manager operating in the English Premiership.
He is Ricky Sbragia who manages Sunderland.
He was born in Scotland to Italian parents.
Sunderland are 12th in the table.
However, they have a game in hand that would tale them up to joint 9th, one point out of 8th place if they won it.
Come on Sunderland!
