Dog Pound
The man in the white van with Dog Control written on it ran through the town on Thursday knocking all the doors (but not peeping through the locks) and asking people if they had a dog.
He said that there had been complaints that dogs had been up in the centre of town fouling the footpaths.
There was a dog roaming loose in the lane by our road but he took no interest on that or in finding its owner.
Licence
What he wanted was to know who had a dog, to take their name and to give them a form saying they had to purchase a licence within 10 days up at the post office.
It seems it costs €12.70.
This seemed to be the main point of his roam around the town.
No Cats
Someone said to him "are you going to do something about all the stray cats roaming the town"?
He told them that he was the dog guy and he didn't do cats.
He must know the 'cat man' though (if there is such a thing and could have offered to pass it on to him (or her).
One would surmise that as there is no licence for cats they are quiet happy for them to roam the town fouling the footpaths.
Visitors
With the Government cutbacks there are all sorts of people roaming the town looking to get in a few extra pounds for different government and Council departments.
If they managed to get 8 people to buy a licence in Moville that would only be about €100.
If they got 80 people to buy licences that would be €1,000.
It doesn't seem worth the bother.
That would be peanuts for a Government department.
Scrapped
Indeed dog licences were actually scrapped in Britain in 1987 when they found out that the cost of collecting it and administering it was actually higher than the amount brought in.
Perhaps bonuses are given for every dog licence bought after a 'raid' on a town.
I wonder who we can expect to see next.
