Keaveney Encourages Events Co Operation to Maximise Economic Potential

As the summer comes to a close Senator Cecilia Keaveney has congratulated the many committees and individuals that have given of their time to put onevents for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors but has also called on groups to think bigger to maximise the potential of the Derry Stopover and the City of Culture.

"As people breathe a sigh of relief after another successful season the last thing some will want to think about is planning for next year.

Planning in Advance

"However I believe it is now the time not just to think of individual events but a calendar within Inishowen that can take us from early 2011 right through to December 2013.

"There is a focus nationally on the North West that is centred around the Derry Stopover of 2012 and the City of Culture of 2013.

"It is vital that we, on the periphery of Derry decide that we want a 'share of the action' and work together on a very big picture level to claim our share of that focus.

Working Together

"By working together, not only within but between towns and villages, there are issues such as economies of scale, shared resources, avoiding clashes of dates and being able to pad out events that can be addressed.

"By working together events committees and business interests that are directly or indirectly involved in tourism can identify not only problems but also drive solutions that help everyone.

Strength in Numbers

"Our festivals, regattas and other events are individually very good.

"There is an added capacity that can still be attained in terms of marketing and funding support.

"We must continue to realise that there is an economic potential in tourism.

Realising Potential

"We know from our own experiences that there is a great community value in having a variety of events. If we can find mechanisms to plan on a bigger scale we can realise that bigger potential.

"I strongly feel that the bigger the scale of co-operation the more seriously we can present our case to both the public but also to any
potential funders.

Maximising Potential

"Events will happen over the next years. Those involved in committees will continue to meet over the winter as in years gone by.

"I am willing to assist in any way to ensure that we in Inishowen maximise the potential of this North West focus afforded to us by both the City of Culture and the Stopover.

"It won't be easy but it is a challenge worth rising to" commented Senator Cecilia Keaveney.
