Bredagh River silting and sanding up

Bredagh River

In the old days, according to my father, all the houses in Moville were built from sand from the shores of the Bredagh River.

It seems that the horses and carts used to enter the river from the River Row via the little track just beside the bridge and go downstream to the edge of the Bay Field but on the River Row or Cow Park (or Fair Green) end.

They used to load up on the sand from there and go and build the houses.

Anyone in an older house in Moville will have had their house built by the sand from there.

Brown Trout

According to my father you use to see brown trout jumping in the lower reaches of the river.

However, there are none there any more.

The river bed is all silted up and so the trout can't lay their eggs in the gravel.

Also, as you can see from the pictures the sand is starting to build up.

Fewer Herons

Another thing my father noticed is that there are a lot fewer herons this year.

He said that he hasn't seen one since he has been over.

I've seen the odd one, but he's right - they're not there in the numbers they used to be.

No Fish

The obvious answer to that one is that there isn't the fish there to feed them any more.

You used to regularly see the herons down by the beach on the River Row.

Then you would see them glide slowly over the Bredagh River.

But not this year.
