Putting Green

Moville man, Gerry McLaughlin, took his first putt in Moville's putting green around 70 years ago.

"I think I was around 11 or 12 when I first played there. We used to play football in the area where the Putting Green is now before they made the Putting Green. The Crazy golf was added many years later".

The Putting Green, itself, had been shut for 12 years before Finbarr McCallion and Movania Parkinson won the tender to open it again. They've also opened a cafe there too with great views over Lough Foyle.

The cafe and Crazy Golf have been open for a couple of months now but after 12 years of being closed the suface of the putting green hasn't been ready to use till now.

History

Said Finbarr McCallion, "The Putting Green has been traditionally at the centre of Moville life for many years. It's part of Moville's history. It's great to be the latest person to take responsibility for looking after it".

So, how did Gerry McLaughlin do with his first attempt?

He got down in two.

Said Gerry "There used to be always tournaments there when I was in my teens. My older brother John and his friends, when in their twenties, used to have a competition every evening during the summer and then the winner each night went through to the grand final on the Saturday. Considering that it has been closed for 12 years Finbarr has got it into good enough condition. It will be great to see the youngsters playing putting again".
