It’s Friday morning 3rd August 2018. Just an ordinary Friday in many places. But not so here in Muff. It’s the onset of our 38th annual Muff Festival. A weekend for the village, the community, and the wider surrounding areas to come together and enjoy a family fun weekend.
The first event of the festival kicked off last night with the ‘Over 40’s fancy dress football in memory of Junior McConnellogue’. This was a first for the event as it commemorated the life of our much loved postman Junior. And a very fun evening was had.
Later today the opening parade will take place in the village at 7pm. Bring the family and friends along to enjoy local businesses and people showcase a variety of themes and frolics through the village street. Later tomorrow night the Festival Queen will be chosen at the Squealing Pig. A ‘teen disco’ will also take place in the festival field with DJ Ois bosh. A great event for the teens in the locality.
Saturday will see a host of events taking place throughout the village. Teddy Bear’s picnic, It’s a Knockout, Great Muff Bake-off, Pet Show, Circus Skills workshop, Pet Show, Rosebud, Junior Rose, Teen Rose, Talent competition for various ages, Battle of the Bands and lots more in the village.
Sunday will see the Festival Lap of the foyle cycle, Annual Gymkhana, Yoga, Fancy Dress competition, Bonny Baby, Horseshoe competition, Glamorous Granny, Wife-Carrying Competition, Sports, Songs of Praise, Lorry Pulling, Ceili and Teen Disco.
Monday sees the Children’s Treasure Hunt, Photo competition and Car Treasure Hunt.
A very fun-filled weekend is definitely in store.
One of the highlights of the festival weekend is of course the Wife Carrying Competition on Sunday afternoon. This year the competition is sponsored by the Muff Liquor Company and as always will prove a very fun and competitive event. Be sure to be in that festival field on Sunday for 4pm.
There’s so much happening over the entire weekend and it will as always be a great one.
Huge praise must surely go to the folk who work tirelessly behind the scenes each year to ensure this festival takes place. They meet, they plan, they organise and they ensure this festival takes place for the entire community. They volunteer their time throughout the year and more so throughout the festival weekend. So do go along to the village from this evening and show your support to the work these folk have put in. There really is something for everyone. And should you have some spare time over the weekend to volunteer and help out, just let one of the committee know and they will find some work for you. There’s always room for more volunteers. And it’s never too late to offer your time. It will be so appreciated and prove very rewarding.
The village festival is all about community. Be part of that community and support the festival from it’s opening later today at 7pm.
Check out the festival programme for events that you might be interested in. There are lots to choose from.
Have a great weekend one and all.
