To say the entire locality has gone ‘ice crazy’ is an understatement at present but this ‘ice bucket challenge’ has not only gripped our own village of Muff, but the entire world of social media! From the very young to the very old, everyone is taking part!
The ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ originated as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on a persons head to promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. It went viral on social media during July/August 2014. In the US, many people participate for the ALS Association, and in the UK and Ireland, people participate for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Many people are now opting to donate money from the Ice Bucket Challenge to other organisations.

The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then nominating others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated participants have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation.
To donate to the Motor Neurone Disease Association in Ireland one must text to 50300 and €2 will be donated to the charity.
At present everyone has heard screams and laughter from all around the local area during recent days and weeks. This is the sound of someone doing their Ice Bucket Challenge.
Over the past week a number of local businesses in Muff have been carrying out the challenge and donating to numerous charities. The Squealing Pig staff have donated their proceeds to the local Red Cross and the staff at Spar Muff will be carrying out their challenge over the coming days for the same cause. If you see a bucket, just throw in a euro, or just 50c, every cent counts.

It may seem a tad crazy and extreme but it is raising much needed funds for a variety of charities. So if you get a nomination do donate, and pour some water if need be. It’s all in the name of a very good cause. Happy ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ over the forthcoming weekend all that have yet to do it!
