Craic On

I remember one of the sounds that one heard when I came over as a kid was the sound of crickets down Bath Green. Their chirruping went on all summer long.

There were fewer when I cam to live here but you still heard the odd one or two not only down the Green but in my backyard.

However, I haven’t heard a single cricket this year. I wonder what has happened to them.

Perhaps it is the big driven mowers they use nowadays when they used to use a hand-pushed mower. Maybe they can’t get out the way quick enough now.

Maybe it’s chemicals that they might spray on the Green to kill weeds that does it.

Or maybe it is some other reason.

But they seem to have gone now.
