The past two nights have seen the Philip Lafferty Memorial Shield get underway for it’s 5th year. This football tournament was set up by Redcastle United F.C. in memory of Philip Lafferty. Philip was an avid football fan and player over the years and dedicated much of his time to the sport. He was well known for his skill both on and off the pitch.
Sadly Philip passed away almost 5 years ago, but this tournament is a legacy to his memory. Philip pic
Last night saw Inishowen U19’s take on Finn Harps U19’s. Inishowen were the better side and won 3.2. They are now through to the final on Monday night. Tonight saw Redcastle Utd. U19’s take on Derry City U19’s. Derry were successful with a 3.0 win. The final on Monday night 7th July, will take place at 7.30pm at Redcastle Utd. football pitch.
All monies collected over the past two nights and on Monday night coming will go towards the Donegal Hospice. A very worthy cause. Please do come along and support.
A history of Redcastle Utd. football club is available to read on the Inishowen football league website. This history was written by Philip Lafferty. It’s well worth a read. A real testimony to himself and his beloved club.
I have a particular interest in this tournament. It’s in memory of Philip and the man is someone I knew quite well. He’s the father of my 4 cousins. He’s the baby brother of my mother. He was one of my sisters best friends. He was a mate of mine. He’s my uncle. Philip Lafferty!
