Unemployment

We keep hearing that unemployment rates are falling. However, that only counts those that are claiming unemployment. We know how many young people from this area are now abroad in the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

None of these are counted on the Irish Unemployment register.

Now we know that are 400,000 of them who have gone – that’s 10% of the Irish population, i.e. 1-in-10 of people in this country have now left.

So, the number leaving the country is greater than the fall in unemployment.

However, many of them will not be allowed to stay in the countries they have gone to. When they start coming back we will see the real situation.
