Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease to get and it is an unfortunate way to spend the last years of a productive life.

I found an article on the internet 10 Early Signs of Alzheimers

Have a look and see if you have any of the early symptoms. I found that I had 6 of the 10 to some degree.

No Direction Home

I’ve always been hopeless with directions. If I walk somewhere I often can’t find my way back. It seems one of my sisters is the same. Nowadays if I walk somewhere that is unfamiliar, say in a town or city, every time I turn a corner I look back to try to memorize some building that is behind me so that I can recognise it on the way back.

If I don’t, everything looks totally different to me. I’ve had to get taxis before to get me back to where I came from.

Several times I’ve not been able to find my way back to my table in a pub if the toilet happens to be in another bar in the same pub. I usually have to go outside the pub and find the entrance where I came in and go in that way to find my table and companions again.

So, that’s one I’ve always had. Maybe I started early.

Bewildered

Another one I have is walking up the town and forgetting where I was going. I always remember pretty quickly but it still does throw one for a second or so.

I also sometimes forget that I’ve got something cooking in the kitchen or that I’m filling up the sink for the dishes. It’s usually because I’m on my PC and something else has taken my attention but it is one of the signs.

Wrong Club

Another one is that I sometimes start supporting the wrong football team for a second or two before I realise my mistake. For instance say Liverpool were playing Man Utd and I got distracted by an email arriving on my PC or I was reading something in the newspaper.

It has happened that when there is a sudden attack I’ll look at the screen and I’ll be wanting the team on the ball to score or do well before realising it’s the wrong team. It only happens for a second or two before I twig.

It hasn’t got to the stage yet where I’ve cheered a crucial goal in an important game only to realise that it was against my team and not for them.

Adding Up

I also used to be able to add up 2 and 3 digit numbers pretty quickly but now I have to do it twice to check and it often happens that they don’t tally.

It’s also happened to me that I’ve been talking about something and when I’ve had to take a bit of a diversion or someone asks me something that I’ve forgotten what it was I was going to say and what point I was going to make in the first place.

I’ve also put things in safe places and forgotten where I put them. I did that with my grandmother’s and great grandmother’s wedding rings and I haven’t a clue where they are. I just found them recently from the previous place I put them for safe keeping.

Confused

If you see me out and about the place ask me if I know where I am and where I’m going. I haven’t forgotten any people yet but I do forget names or even forget words.

Perhaps these symptoms are normal and that other people get some of these symptoms as well as they get older. One thing I haven’t got to yet is telling people the same thing over and over again.
