Giovanni Trapattoni has finally quit as Republic of Ireland manager after yet another defeat last night. He has been with the team for the last 5 and a half years and has had much criticism from the beginning. However as one status on facebook said ‘it’s hard to make a silk purse out of a sows ear but he tried!! You gave us the Euros – thanks Trap!’ Very apt I believe.

Professional footballers must be just that, and the Irish team have been everything but over the past couple of years. Another facebooker stated ‘Stat of the day: This day 28 years ago was exactly 28 years prior to Trapattoni getting sacked as Ireland manager.’ There will be remarks of all kinds floating about over the coming days no doubt.

But we can now only hope that the next manager makes the right player decisions and get the Republic of Ireland back on track as a world class footie team. Good luck to the FAI on the selection.

Maybe our very own Golly G or Vincie will get a call up……
